The Master's degree in Conservation and Restoration, following a Bachelor's degree in the same field, provides the necessary training for entry into the profession of conservator-restorer in accordance with international standards and recommendations.
IPT, through its School of Technology of Tomar (ESTT), is the Higher Education Institution in Portugal (IESP) that has offered academic training in conservation and restoration and access to the profession of conservator-restorer in Portugal since 1989.
The course, multidisciplinary in nature, is developed in constant contact with real-world situations and contexts, whether ex situ in the IPT's Conservation and Restoration Laboratory, or in situ, in museums, buildings, monuments and heritage sites.
The training is based on several scientific disciplines, specifically Conservation and Restoration, Exact and Natural Sciences, and Human and Social Sciences. Equally important is the combination of theory and practice, of knowing and doing, that exists in the course and which allows, in an integrated way and supported by analytical techniques, the study of cultural assets from various points of view – historical-artistic, iconographic-iconological, technological (technical and material), state of preservation and conservation – and, from this multidisciplinary study, to make informed decisions based on ethical and deontological principles, and to develop sustainable intervention methodologies for cultural assets.
