Conservation and Restoration

The future of the past: science and commitment to the conservation of cultural heritage

The Master's degree in Conservation and Restoration, following a Bachelor's degree in the same field, provides the necessary training for entry into the profession of conservator-restorer in accordance with international standards and recommendations.

IPT, through its School of Technology of Tomar (ESTT), is the Higher Education Institution in Portugal (IESP) that has offered academic training in conservation and restoration and access to the profession of conservator-restorer in Portugal since 1989.

The course, multidisciplinary in nature, is developed in constant contact with real-world situations and contexts, whether ex situ in the IPT's Conservation and Restoration Laboratory, or in situ, in museums, buildings, monuments and heritage sites.

The training is based on several scientific disciplines, specifically Conservation and Restoration, Exact and Natural Sciences, and Human and Social Sciences. Equally important is the combination of theory and practice, of knowing and doing, that exists in the course and which allows, in an integrated way and supported by analytical techniques, the study of cultural assets from various points of view – historical-artistic, iconographic-iconological, technological (technical and material), state of preservation and conservation – and, from this multidisciplinary study, to make informed decisions based on ethical and deontological principles, and to develop sustainable intervention methodologies for cultural assets.

Objectives

The course aims to train professionals capable of entering the profession of conservator-restorer in accordance with international standards and recommendations in the field of Conservation and Restoration, namely the European Network for Conservation and Restoration Education (ENCoRE), of which IPT is a part, and the European Confederation of Conservators-Restorers Organisations (ECCO).

Therefore, the master's program is closely linked to the Bachelor's degree in Conservation and Restoration at IPT, so that together they provide the essential 5-year academic training for entry into the profession.

More specifically, the master's program aims to develop the theoretical knowledge and practical skills acquired during undergraduate studies, to competently, creatively, critically, autonomously, and interdisciplinarily conceive and develop Conservation and Restoration projects and methodologies that allow for ethical and sustainable interventions in cultural heritage, in accordance with international standards and best practice recommendations.

Professional Goals

Holders of a Master's degree can ensure the coordination, technical direction, and execution of any Conservation and Restoration intervention, particularly in classified or soon-to-be-classified cultural assets – which, according to Portuguese legislation, is only possible for those with 5 years of training in Conservation and Restoration (Decree-Law No. 140/2009) and 5 years of professional experience after obtaining the degree.

The professional activity of a conservator-restorer (Master in Conservation and Restoration), in addition to conservation and restoration itself, encompasses the management of cultural assets (safeguarding and enhancement), the preservation of cultural assets, and can be developed in public (central and local administration) and private organizations, in companies, associations and Private Social Solidarity Institutions (IPSS), in the following types of organizations:
