Objectives
At the end of this course unit, students should demonstrate the following competences:
1. Ability to analyse and relate knowledge and to make critically informed judgements in specific areas of the study programme.
2. Ability to work autonomously in carrying out research activities within the field of the study programme.
3. Ability to communicate the work carried out, as well as the underlying knowledge and reasoning, in a document including an introduction, state of the art, theoretical foundations, and conclusions.
4. Ability to critically analyse the adoption of emerging Internet of Things technologies in organisational contexts, considering their applicability, value creation, feasibility, technological maturity, integration, risks, security, scalability, and implementation challenges.
Program
The Seminar syllabus will include, in addition to lectures/workshops delivered by experts in the field of Computer Engineering Internet of Things, including specialists from the business sector, the completion of an in-depth literature review on an emerging topic in the Internet of Things.
The lectures/workshops may address, in addition to scientific and technological components, aspects related to the adoption of Internet of Things technologies in organisational and business contexts, namely use cases, value creation, economic feasibility, technological maturity, integration, risks, security, scalability, and implementation challenges.
Students will be required to prepare a final document addressing the following points:
1. Introduction: what the researched topic consists of; its motivation and the problems to be addressed; how it will be approached and studied.
2. Literature review: what is known about the topic, identifying the main existing approaches, technologies, methodologies, and results.
3. Methodology/Foundations: the relevant scientific and technological foundations and how the problem under study may be addressed.
4. Applicability and business context: whenever applicable to the topic, analysis of use cases, level of technological maturity, potential for value creation, feasibility of adoption, integration with existing systems, scalability, risks, and the main implementation challenges in an organisational context.
5. Conclusions: the main implications of the existing approaches and methodologies; the problems that remain open; the identified limitations; and what may be improved or investigated in the future.
6. References: all work must be properly supported and referenced.
Evaluation Methodology
Final report on an emerging topic within the field of the study programme 70% of the final grade.
Presentation and discussion of the final work 30% of the final grade.
A final grade of at least 9.5 out of 20 is required to pass the course unit.
