(2) Docente que lecciona

Prerequisites

Objectives
Developing capacities to understand the issues of air, water and soil pollution and the causes and effects of environmental pollution, as well as the routes that different types of pollutants take in the environment and living beings. Development of skills in the application of treatment and decontamination techniques and processes.

Program
1-Introduction to Pollution: Concept of pollution; Irreversible processes; Contaminants and pollutant distribution; Fates of metals and radioactive isotopes.
2-Environmental legislation: Legislation, regulation and ethics; International agreements and protocols; Portuguese Environment Agency (APA).
3-Water pollution: Waste water treatment; Primary treatment (grading, flocculation and coagulation); Sedimentation; Secondary treatment (biological processes, activated sludge); Anaerobic processes; Fuel gas production (maybe this part goes to solid waste)
4-Air pollution: Main contaminants; Production of energy; Mobile fountains and stationary fountains; National efforts (OECD) to reduce emissions of contaminants; The case of carbon dioxide; Treatment systems; Introduction to the study of noise as a pollution factor.
5-Soil pollution: Pesticides and herbicides; Heavy metals; In-situ and ex-situ decontamination options.
6-Industrial solid waste: Composition; Components of solid industrial waste management (recycling, composting, deposition and energy generation); Physico-chemical treatment processes (crushing, filtration and separation, chemical precipitation, photolysis, oxidation and chemical reduction, dehalogenation, evaporation, solidification, stabilization and encapsulation).

Evaluation Methodology
Continuous assessment consists of five assessment moments, each of which is valued at 4 points for a final assessment totalizing 20 points. Approval is obtained when the
the sum of all moments of evaluation is equal to or greater than 10 values. The assessment during the exam period consists in a written test valued at 20 points.

Teaching Method
Theoretical and theoretical-practical classes that address the programmatic contents. Practical classes with discussion of real cases.
