Objectives
Students must understand the fundamental principles of the relational model, identifying its main components, be able to analyze information requirements, identify entities, attributes and relationships, and develop entity-relationship models, develop skills in using the SQL language, apply SQL statements for data manipulation and querying (DML and DQL), including inserting, updating and deleting records, as well as simple and complex queries.
Program
1. Introduction to Database Management Systems (DBMS): Main characteristics of database systems. Advantages. When to use and when not to use DBMS. DBMS data models:
DBMS: Relational Model; DBMS Architecture; DBMS Market. The database system design process.
2. Relational Model: Tables, attributes, keys (primary and foreign), relationships.
3. SQL: Commands for data manipulation. Querying, inserting, updating, and deleting data. Select command. Clauses (WHERE, GROUP BY, etc.). Functions (strings and temporal).
Joins, unions, subqueries (simple, related, and derived tables). Inset, Update, and Delete commands: Simple and with subqueries.
4. Programmable Objects: Procedures, Triggers, Events, Cursors.
Evaluation Methodology
Final Grade in Attendance Assessment (or Continuous Assessment - AVC) = Tests (80%) + Worksheets (20%).
Final Grade in Exam Assessment: Written Test (80%) and AVC (20%).
Minimum grade for passing the Course Unit in Attendance Assessment - as determined by the Academic Regulations of the Schools of the Polytechnic Institute of Tomar, in effect on the date of completion of the FUC. Obtaining this grade also results in exemption from the Exam Assessment.
