Prerequisites

Objectives
Students must acquire skills in the field of Catalytic Reactor Engineering, aiming at heterogeneous catalysis, efficiency of solid catalysts, analysis and design of multiphase reaction systems.
Program
1. Introduction. Brief review on chemical kinetics and ideal homogeneous chemical reactors.
2.Heterogeneous catalysis.
2.1 Characterization of catalysts;
2.2 Catalyst deactivation and regeneration
3. Behavior of Catalyst Particles.
3.1 Mathematical models.
3.2 Damkholer equation.
3.3 Efficiency factors.
3.4 Thiele's modulus.
3.5 Operating regimes: chemical, intermediate and diffusional.
4. Fixed Bed Catalytic Reactors.
4.1 Mathematical models.
4.2 Pseudo-homogeneous and heterogeneous models.
4.3 One-dimensional and two-dimensional models.
The practical/computational tasks to be carried out are related to the simulation of the operation of heterogeneous reaction systems - Performance of Fixed Bed Catalytic Reactors.
Evaluation Methodology
The final classification in the different evaluation periods is obtained by weighting the classifications obtained in a written test (40%) and in practical/computational tasks related to the performance of catalytic reactors of fixed bed (60%), with a minimum of 8 in both items. Students who do not carry out the practical/computational tasks during the contact period will be excluded from the final assessment.
