Prerequisites
Basics of chemical properties and bonding.

Objectives
An overview of the structure, bonding and reactions
in organic molecules. Introduction to reaction mechanisms and its
representation. Study of the main categories of monofunctional
organic compounds.

Program
1 - Structure and bonding in organic molecules
1.1 Characteristics of the carbon atom. 1.2 Molecular structure. 1.3 Isomerism. 1.4 Bonding. 1.5 Inductive effect. 1.6 Resonance.
2 - Reagents and reactions in organic chemistry
2.1 Reaction mechanism and its representation. 2.2 Electronic aspect of reactions and intermediates. 2.3 Homolytic reactions. Free radicals. 2.4 Heterolytic reactions. Carbocations and carbanions.
3 - Hydrocarbons: structure, physical properties, nomenclature and reactivity
3.1 Alkanes. Homolytic substitution. 3.2 Cycloalkanes. 3.3 Alkenes and alkynes. Electrophilic addition. 3.4 Aromatic hydrocarbons. Electrophilic substitution.
4 - Structure, nomenclature, properties and reactivity of the major groups of organic compounds
4.1 Alcohols, phenols, ethers and thiols. Substitution and elimination reactions. 4.2 mines. Hoffmann elimination. 4.3 Aldehydes and ketones. Addition and substitution reactions. Keto - enol tautomerism. 4.4 Carboxylic acids and derivative functions. Nucleophilic substitution by addition-elimination.
Laboratorial practice
TP1. Separation of plant pigments by chromatography.
TP2. Study of the main reactions of organic functional groups.
TP3. Synthesis of the acetylsalicylic acid.
TP4. Synthesis of the tribromophenol.
TP5. Techniques of purification: recrystallization of acetylsalicylic acid and tribromophenol.

Evaluation Methodology
A - 6 intermediate theoretical tests(sum=20 marks);
B - laboratory assignments and written laboratory test;
C - final theoretical examination.
Final grade: (Ongoing assessment)- 0.6*A + 0.4*B or (Exam assessment) - 0.6*C + 0.4*B
