Objectives
Competencies to be developed:
Select electrical control, switching, and protection devices;
Size electrical conduits and choose protective equipment for people and installations;
Design and dimension electrical switchboards;
Plan interior and safety lighting;
Design and dimension ITED and home automation systems;
Interpret and create electrotechnical diagrams and schematics (electrical installations / ITED / home automation).
Program
1. Stages, structure, and procedures of electrotechnical projects (Electrical Installations and ITED).
2. Types of diagrams and symbols: multifilar, single?line, architectural, and schematic diagrams. Main electrotechnical symbols (IEC 60617; EN 60617).
3. Electrical conduits: types of conduits; electrical conductors and cables components, properties, and designations; ducts; conditions for installing conduits.
4. Low-voltage electrical equipment: classification and general characteristics; control devices; switching and protection devices; control and protection equipment in industrial automation contactors and motor starters. Intelligent electronic devices for control, switching, and protection.
5. Overcurrents overloads and short circuits: concepts; thermal effects; establishment of overcurrents; thermal and electrodynamic stresses; simplified calculation of symmetrical short-circuit currents (IEC 909).
6. Sizing of conduits and selection of protections: technical and economic cross-section; maximum admissible current; conditions of normal heating, voltage drop, and short?circuit resistance; utilization time and RMS current; protection devices.
7. Safety of people and equipment: physiological effects of electric current; direct and indirect contact; protection against voltage variations; earthing systems; differential protection; protection indices; personal protection systems; lockout and tagout of an electrical installation.
8. Interior lighting: fundamentals of lighting engineering; concepts and units; luminaires and lamps; lighting systems; Utilization Factor method; design and calculation. Basic notions of emergency lighting.
9. Fundamentals of ITED: characterization; materials, devices, and equipment; design, installation, and operation.
10. Home automation: concept; areas of application and benefits; main technologies and operating principles; monitoring and control of resources and energy consumption in the installation. Characteristics of X10 and KNX technologies devices, transmission media, and protocols. Centralized technical management systems. Conventional installation versus smart installation.
11. Electrical switchboards: protection and distribution boards; motor supply and control boards; general rules for wiring and space management; selection of equipment. Smart electrical switchboards: concept, characteristics, equipment, electronic/digital devices, communication modes, and layouts.
12. Execution of the necessary studies for electrotechnical installation projects (Electrical Installations and ITED) in residential and industrial buildings.
Evaluation Methodology
Continuous assessment based on a practical assignment to be carried out during the semester (40%) and a written test to be taken in the assessment period (60%: theoretical part 30% and practical part 30%).
The minimum grade required to pass the course unit is 10 points in 20 points.
