Objectives
Students should understand the concepts of Iconography and Iconology and their various forms
2. Students should be able to understand the various levels of analysis and interpretation of works of art, which will contribute to their cultural and civic enrichment.
3. Acquire the theoretical and practical knowledge and tools necessary to decode these levels of interpretation, in order to gain autonomy in research and respectiv dissemination about works of art.
4. Whenever possible, direct observation of artistic objects with iconographic value will be carried out through field trips, in order to allow the practical application of the knowledge acquired.

1. From Aby Warburg to Erwin Panofsky: Iconology as a science.
1.1. Origins and evolution of iconological studies and their important contribution to the understanding of works of art.
1.2. Auxiliary disciplines of Iconography and Iconology
2. Iconography, Iconology and Symbolism: the value of the image
2.1. Definition of concepts: iconography, iconology, allegory, symbol.
2.2. Specific aspects of Iconography
2.3. Types of Iconography according to its object
2.4. Sources of Iconography
3. Christian iconography
3.1. Sources of Judeo-Christian iconography
3.2. Th Counter-Reformation: the last session of the Council of Trent and its guidelines on Catholic Iconography.
3.3. Iconography of the Old Testament - the most frequent cenes
3.4. Iconography of the New Testament.
3.4.1. The importance of Apocriphe Evangiles
5. Profane iconography. A possible systematisation
5.1. Iconography of political power:
5.1.1. From the imperial iconography of Antiquity to Nationalist Iconography.
5.2. Iconography of the great figures of Literature, Arts, Philosophy and Sciences.
5.3. Scientific-geographical (discoveries, exoticism).
Evaluation Methodology
Continuous assessment: two written assignments on the themes in the syllabus. Minimum pass mark: 10/10 (20) or 8/12 (20)
Final Exam: a written assignement on all of the themes in the syllabus Minimum pass mark: 10/20
