Objectives
A. Develop frameworks for reading the history and theory of cinema and understand its pivotal moments from pre-cinema to contemporary times;
B. Critically situate referential film works in the movements and trends they are part of;
C. Identify and conceptually understand the main theories of cinema;
D. Critically and reflexively establish the relationship between film theory and practice;
E. Understand the evolution of aesthetic and technological paradigms.
Program
1. The invention of cinema: from its origins to narrative cinema;
2. The silent era and early theoretical approaches;
3. The cinematic avant-garde of the 1920s: German Expressionism; French cinema; Soviet cinema;
4. The sound revolution;
5. Classical American cinema: the evolution and decline of the studio system;
6. Italian neorealism: the perspective of Italian neorealist authors;
7. Auteur cinema in Japan: themes and stylistic aspects of Japanese auteur cinema;
8. Phenomenology of realism: realist theories;
9. The French nouvelle vague: convergences and divergences among the authors of the French nouvelle vague;
10. The national schools of new cinema: Great Britain and free cinema; new German cinema; Brazilian cinema novo;
11. Nonfiction film: documentary and experimentation;
12. Tendencies in Contemporary Cinema.
Evaluation Methodology
1. Frequency assessment
1.1 Attendance and regular intervention on the themes-films under discussion in class (10%).
1.2 Two written tests (attendance): one written test during the semester (45%) and another written test at the end of the semester (45%).
2. Exam-based assessment
2.1 Normal Season: Written test (attendance) covering all taught content (100%)
2.2 Appeal Season: Written test (attendance) covering all taught content (100%)
2.3 Special Season: Written test (attendance) covering all taught content (100%)
The evaluation is made in accordance with the provisions of Art. 11 of the Academic Regulation of IPT Schools. Students who obtain a grade equal to or greater than 10 values are waived from the Exam.
