Prerequisites

Objectives
Upon completion of the course unit, the student should be able to program 8-bit PIC microcontrollers from the PIC18F family in C, developing projects involving digital and analogue signal acquisition, external interrupts, actuation through digital outputs and PWM, compliance with strict timing requirements using timers and interrupts, and asynchronous and synchronous serial communications. The student should also be able to program these microcontrollers both through direct register access and by using the functions provided by peripheral libraries.

Program
1) Introduction to embedded systems
(a) Examples;
(b) Architectures;
(c) Technologies.

2) XC8 compiler: data types.

3) Introduction to PIC microcontrollers
(a) Architecture: registers, buses, datapath and memory;
(b) MPLAB X development environment;
(c) Introduction to programming with the XC8 compiler;
(d) Proteus simulation environment.

4) Programming and configuration of PIC18F-family microcontrollers
(a) Digital input/output;
(b) External interrupts;
(c) Timers and timer-generated interrupts;
(d) Finite-state machine implementation;
(e) LCD interfacing;
(f) Compare, Capture and PWM modes;
(g) Counters;
(h) Analogue inputs.

5) Data communications
(a) Asynchronous serial communication (UART/RS-232);
(b) Synchronous serial communication (I²C/SPI).

6) Design and development of small embedded-system applications

Evaluation Methodology
Written test in one of the Exam periods (60%) and Laboratory component (40%) which consists of: 1) Laboratory projects carried out in groups; and 2) Practical mini-tests (programming) carried out individually associated with the various topics of the course. In the laboratory component, the weight of laboratory Projects and Mini-tests is 50% for each component.
Passing the course requires a minimum grade of 40% in the Written Test and a minimum grade of 50% in the Laboratory component. The minimum passing grade is 10 out of 20.

The assessment methodology and criteria are the same for all assessment periods: regular, resit, and special. The grade obtained for the laboratory component remains valid for all assessment periods of the corresponding academic year.
