Objectives
A- To apprehend the fundamental and current trends of Semiotics;
- recognize the evolution of the concepts of sign and semiotics; the discussions, authors and understandings;
- Acquire knowledge about the theoretical construct of Semiotics and the foundations of the two currents;
B- To understand the world using the knowledge that through Semiotics allows its interpretation.
- Acquire knowledge about some aspects of semiotic theories: Peirce; of Greimas and the semiotics of Barthes' narrative.
C- To master the analytical instruments based on the authors' proposals for analysis.

Program
I- Introduction: general concepts
1. sign, meaning and signification;
2 Signification versus communication.
II- The currents of semiotics:
1. Peirce- Peirce's Trichotomies
2. Greimas: the semiotic square
3. Barthes and Eco: the semiotic 'fusion'
III- Semiotics of narrative
- The semiotic analysis of narrative (Barthes)
IV- Other Semiotics
- The semiotic analysis of the image (using the models of Peirce, Greimas, Barthes)
- Practices of analysis of the semiotic object based on the interrelation of the theories studied

Evaluation Methodology
Evaluation by frequency (Continuous and cumulative):

- Written test (40%) - minimum grade 8
- Oral presentation of an analysis according to the models (40%) minimum grade 10 points
- Work carried out during contact hours (minimum of 3) (20%)

Weighted average of all elements. The lack of an evaluation element leads to the final exam.
Students who in an evaluation by attendance obtain a grade equal to or greater than 10 points are exempt from the Exam.

Evaluation by Exam:
Exam - written + oral test (50%+50%), minimum final grade-10 points.

• In the Special Examination Period, the definition of the Evaluation by Exam applies.
• Student-workers: they must contact the teacher during the first two weeks of classes to find out about her form of evaluation.
• Erasmus students: they should contact the teacher during the first two weeks of classes to find out about their form of evaluation.
• In all Evaluation periods:
The student obtains approval to the UC, in accordance with the provisions of Points 11 and 12, of Article 11, of the IPT Academic Regulation.
