Objectives
In general, get to know the Portuguese Media (property, editorial line, target audience, missions, professional constraints and ethical issues), as well as the way they present their contents (from the point of view of the Written Discourse, but also of the visual representation), with special focus on the representation of minorities and fracturing themes.
Program
1. The power of Communication, functions and media owners: from historical context to the present.
2. Characteristics of the different types of Media: reference, popular, 'hybrid' 'alternative' and independent.
3. Print and digital journalistic discourse: editorial options in terms of written content.
4. Photojournalism and Editorial Design: linking visual elements; relationship between professionals.
5. The causes of the media: the role of the media in determining and/or fracturing issues.
6. Media representations: minorities and off-the- agenda issues.
Evaluation Methodology
Continous assessment involves carrying out an individual assignment on one of the topics specified in the syllabus. Work will be presented and discussed in class. Alternatively, they can choose a written test.
Examination and Resit Examination assessment are a written test.
