Objectives
A. To know and identify key moments in the history of cinema from the 1950s onwards.
B. Understand and analyze the aesthetic dimension of film.
C. Be familiar with the aesthetic diversity of cinema from the 1950s onwards.
D. Be familiar with the relevant moments and names of Portuguese cinema from the second half of the 20th century to the present day.
Program
1. Modernity in cinema between auteur cinema and new cinematic waves:
1.1. Italian neorealism: the neorealist look through the cinema of Cesare Zavattini & Vittorio De Sica, Roberto Rossellini, Luchino Visconti and Guiseppe De Santis;
1.2. Neorealism in Portuguese cinema: the resistance cinema of Manuel Guimarães;
1.3. Japanese auteur cinema: themes and stylistic aspects of the cinemas of Yasujiro Ozu, Kenji Mizoguchi and Akira Kurosawa.
1.4. Nouvelle vague: convergences and divergences in the authors of the French nouvelle vague from Jean-Luc Godard to Agnès Varda;
1.5. New European waves: the Brechtian influence on the aesthetic proposals of the new German cinema; Dogma 95.
1.6. New Portuguese cinema: from the miracle producer António da Cunha Telles to the new cinema of Paulo Rocha;
2. Tendencies in contemporary cinema:
2.1. New geographies of cinema;
2.2. Independent cinema in different geographic perimeters.
Evaluation Methodology
1. Frequency assessment
1.1 Attendance and regular intervention on the themes-films under discussion in class (10%).
1.2 Two written tests (attendance): one written test during the semester (45%) and another written test at the end of the semester (45%).
2. Exam-based assessment
2.1 Normal Season: Written test (attendance) covering all taught content (100%)
2.2 Appeal Season: Written test (attendance) covering all taught content (100%)
2.3 Special Season: Written test (attendance) covering all taught content (100%)
The evaluation is made in accordance with the provisions of Art. 11 of the Academic Regulation of IPT Schools. Students who obtain a grade equal to or greater than 10 values are waived from the Exam.
