Objectives
When intervening in a building to have the ability to: Part I: A- Understand at what time it was built and its cultural importance; B-Recognize your constructive and structural system; Part 2: Capacity to solve the problems of the mechanics of the material point systems and rigid bodies at rest

Program
Part I-Building science
I.1-Portuguese vernacular architecture
Description of construction systems, structural systems (operation and evolution), comfort conditions (thermal, natural light and noise) and nomenclature of building elements
Recommendations on how best to intervene to ensure the best conditions of habitability and security against possible earthquakes (horizontal actions).
I.2-Urban income buildings
Description of construction systems, structural systems (operation and evolution), comfort conditions (thermal, natural light and noise) and nomenclature of building elements
Recommendations on how best to intervene to ensure the best conditions of habitability and security against possible earthquakes (horizontal actions).

II.1 - STRUCTURAL SYSTEMS AND ACTIONS IN STRUCTURES OF BUILDINGS AND BRIDGES
Presentation of current structural systems in Civil Engineering. Description of current actions in structures of buildings and bridges.
II.2 - RIGID BODY EQUILIBRIUM
Universal static equations; Connections or supports - Degrees of freedom; Classification of material systems as a function of external connections - Isostatic systems, hyperstatic systems and hypostatic systems; Equilibrium of rigid bodies - stable and unstable equilibrium; Calculation of reactions; Equilibrium of material systems in two and three dimensions.
II.3 – 2D ANALYSIS of STRUCTURES
Simply supported beams and Gerber beams, types of loads and supports; Three-hinge arches of three and isostatic associations of composite systems.
III.4 – TRUSSES
Internal staticity; Global staticity; The method of nodes; The method of section (Ritter).
III.5 - INTERNAL FORCES AND DIAGRAMS
Internal forces; Diagrams; Relationships between load, shear force and bending moment.
III.6 - CABLES
Cables with concentrated loads; Cables with distributed loads - Parabolic and catenaries cables.
III.7 - MASS GEOMETRY
Centre of mass; Static moment; Moment of inertia; Steiner's theorem; Turning radius; Product of inertia; Stiffness centre.

Evaluation Methodology
Part I (weight of 30% in the final average): A written test
Part II(weight of 70% in the final average): Weighted average of the results of the proposed studies during the period of classes (30%) and in the result of a written test (70 %).
Exam waiver: final grade equal to or greater than 9.5
Exam: Written test (Part I (30% weight) and Part II (70% weight))
