Objectives
Understand the concepts and principles of building rehabilitation. Identify epochs of construction and different types of buildings, as regards their constitution, construction process and types of materials employed.
Know the mechanisms of degradation and the pathological process of buildings, as well as the physical phenomena associated with it. To know methodologies, equipment and techniques for the diagnosis of buildings anomalies.
Students are expected to acquire technical and scientific knowledge to diagnose anomalies and develop rehabilitation proposals for buildings, including materials and techniques for rehabilitation and reinforcement of buildings. To give students skills that allow their integration into multidisciplinary teams in the field of building rehabilitation.
Program
1. Introduction to building rehabilitation. Historical and ethical nature of interventions. General principles. Types of buildings to be intervened. 2. General mechanisms of degradation of materials and constructive elements: concept of useful life of constructions; concept of pathology; Degradation factors. 3. Survey and diagnosis: Methodologies and techniques of inspection and diagnosis; Characterization of the state of buildings; Preparation of inspection reports. 4. Pathologies of the materials: Concrete: Fiscal and chemical processes of degradation; corrosion of reinforcements; Woods: degradation factors; protection and conservation treatments. 5 New materials in rehabilitation interventions. 6. Recurrent anomalies in surrounding elements of buildings of recent construction and of old buildings. 7. Anomalies of coatings and finishes: characteristic anomalies of the main types of coatings and finishes. 8. Materials and technologies for building rehabilitation: traditional techniques and interventions with new materials and new technologies. Repair of non-structural anomalies. 9. Legal framework of rehabilitation and programs to support the conservation and rehabilitation of buildings. 10. Presentation of practical cases.
Evaluation Methodology
Assessment consists in a written test (55%) and a practical project(45%). The project consists of a technical report based on regular on-site visits to regeneration works in course of execution or consists of a survey and study of the pathologies of
