Lecturer
- Paulo Manuel Machado Coelho (1)(2)

(1) Docente Responsável
(2) Docente que lecciona

Prerequisites
Not applicable.

Objectives
The students will familiarise themselves with the theory of systems and signals with emphasis on continuous linear and time invariant systems.
They should be able to work with MATLAB - a software for the analysis and simulation of signals systems.

Program
1 - Introduction: Signals and systems classification.
2 - Qualitative analysis of LTI systems: time constant and rise; bandwidth and cutoff frequency; resonance.Analysis of continuous LIT systems in time domain.
3 - Qualitative analysis of LTI systems: time constant and rise time; bandwidth and cutoff frequency; resonance.
4 - Analysis of LIT systems in frequency domain: Laplace transforms; transfer function; stability; transient response and steady state response, frequency response of 1st and 2nd order systems.
5 - Block diagram representation: construction, simplification and analysis.
6 - Mathematical modelling of systems: electrical systems. Mechanical translation systems. Mechanical rotation systems. Liquid systems. Servomechanisms modeling.
7 - Analog filters: low-pass filters, band-pass and high-pass; filter characteristics; analysis of passive filters, seen as of 1st and 2nd order systems.
8 - Basic Systems Identification: examples.
9 - Transient and steady state analysis of higher-order systems.
10 - State-space systems representation.

Evaluation Methodology
Written closed-book examination in the regular assessment seasons( 75%); and Practical assignments (25%).

Teaching Method
Lectures expositive and demonstrative where the study methods are described and exemplified; theoretical-practical and laboratory-practices lessons where application exercises are solved and where laboratory experiments are implemented.
