Prerequisites
Objectives
This course aims at providing skills in the field of building materials, techniques and processes used in the construction of structural elements of buildings including walls, floors and roofs as well as the suitability of materials for construction and coating.
Students should acquire technical skills that will enable them to make effective decisions regarding the materials and products to be used in civil engineering constructions. They should become acquainted with the building processes of common buildings, their fields of application, advantages, disadvantages and limitations.
It is intended that they have a collaborative, interdisciplinary mindset particularly in what concerns the design and supervision of civil engineering constructions.
They should also be aware that functional performance of structural elements depends on the consistency between the materials employed and the technical solution adopted. Acquiring technical skills that allow an appropriate approach and resolution of the practical problems is also crucial.
Program
Introduction
Building walls
Wall coating
Wall moisture
Cracking in masonry walls
Floor coatings
Roofs
Other construction materials and processes.
Evaluation Methodology
Assessment is based on a written test (55%) and a practical project (45%). The roject consists in drawing up a technical report based on a civil engineering work, alternatively,a research assignment on a particular technique
Bibliography
Teaching Method
Presentation of theoretical concepts related to the abovementioned processes used in the construction of structural elements of buildings complemented by audiovisual resources and other media to illustrate the subject matter. Case study analysis.
