Prerequisites
Basics of structure and reactivity of organic compounds.

Objectives
Study of the morphology, synthesis, classification and daily usage of polymers.
Identify the relationships between chemical structure and properties of macromolecular materials.
Recognize the most important polymerisation reactions and the processing of plastic materials.

Program
Theoretical contents
1 - Basic Concepts
Historical review. Structure, architecture and polymer classification. Chain reaction and step by step polymerization. Copolymerization. Nomenclature. Biodegradability and recycling.
2 - Chemical structure, morphology, characteristics and properties of the polymers
MM, DP, amorphous and crystalline morphologies, degree of crystallinity, Tg and Tm, crosslinking. Relationship between chemical structure and properties. Mechanical and thermal properties, flame and chemical resistances, degradability and electrical conductivity. Methods of characterization and analysis.
3 - Synthesis and Polymer Processing
Polymerization reactions: phases, main characteristics and kinetics. From polymer to plastic processing. Additives. Injection molding, extrusion, thermoforming, calendering, curing, pressing, RIM and others. Reinforced plastics and composites.
4 - Natural polymers
Polysaccharides and derivatives. Silk, wool and regenerated proteins. Mixed polymers: rubber, amber, lignin, tall oil derivatives.
Laboratorial practice
TP1. Study of several properties of commodity plastics.
TP2. Purification and polymerization of MMA.
TP3. Polymerization of a poliamide (nylon 6,6).
TP4. Polimerização of PS.
TP5. Efeito de um plastificante nas propriedades de flexão de um polímero reticulado.
TP6. Determinação do DP por viscosimetria capilar – determinação da viscosidade de uma pasta papeleira e cálculo do grau de polimerização da celulose.
TP7. Polímeros de síntese versus polímeros naturais – análise e comparação de propriedades.

Evaluation Methodology
A - Laboratory work assessment. B - Group assignment including oral presentation. C - Final theoretical test.
Final grade - 0.3*A + 0.3*B + 0.4*C
