Objectives
Acquire knowledge in the field of electricity generation through a renewable source, such as wind energy.
Understand the specifics of wind power design and operation for electricity production, including calculations associated with wind farms. Get an understanding of the scale and economic viability of wind farms.
Program
1- Wind energy: wind characteristics; simplified wind modeling; conversion limits; wind turbine performance (power curve); power regulation concepts; types of wind energy conversion systems and their characteristics. Control of active and reactive power production in wind farms.
2- Topology of wind farm electrical networks.
3- Simplified analysis of the economic viability of wind systems.
4- Identification of the technical characteristics of existing wind farms in Portugal (number/type/power of wind turbines; arrangement; energy production; etc.).
Evaluation Methodology
The assessment for this course corresponds to 50% for a practical assignment on wind farms (research, calculations, and equipment selection) and 50% for the written test (Exam).
The minimum passing grade for this course is 47.5% (9.5 points).

Teaching Method
Theoretical and practical classes with explanation and application of associated concepts and exercise resolution; as well as monitoring of practical work with teacher supervision.
Software used in class
The main features of several computer programs dedicated to wind energy will be explored (OpenFAST, PyWake, SOWFA, SimScale, Excel and Word).
