Objectives
By the end of this course unit, students should be able to:
1. Understand the basic concepts of museology and heritage preservation within the context of sustainable development;
2. Use their knowledge to implement approaches that value natural and cultural heritage in their museological and touristic integration, from the perspective of heritage management.
3. Develop, autonomously and in a collaborative environment, the acquired skills, from an innovative and entrepreneurial perspective, in the museological-heritage field.
4. Demonstrate knowledge of the museological landscape in its geographical scales and typological characteristics, in a dimension useful for higher education in tourism and cultural heritage management.
Program
1. Introduction to the curricular unit
1.1. Museums, Museology and Museography. Concepts and articulations.
1.2. Musealization and heritage preservation of territories. Contexts and dynamics
2. Heritage preservation and the role of museology in the heritage process. From concept to practice
2.1. The social function of the museum, sociomuseology and heritage education. Case studies
2.2. Museological typologies and their respective territorial, environmental and cultural contexts.
2.2.1. Tourism and its presence in the domains of heritage preservation and musealization of collections and sites
3. The museological discourse, heritage interpretation and tourist visitation
3.1. Case studies and aspects of public policies (national and international)
3.2. The role of museums in the valorization of heritage-based tourism products
3.2.1. Presentation of case studies and observation on cultural expressions, identities, and programming of activities for public enjoyment
4. The museological management of cultural heritage from an applied research perspective
4.1. Museography as a tool for promoting culture in tourism activities (exhibition design, museological communication, conservation, accessibility and inclusion)
4.1.1. Practices aimed at diverse audiences
5. Reflection on the program and its execution from a perspective of contributing to societal challenges and social sustainability
Evaluation Methodology

Theoretical component (50%) Practical component (50%)
The practical component is demonstrated through the mandatory submission of a Practical Final Project (PFP), which remains the same in all assessment periods.
