Objectives
A. To know the history of Portuguese cinema;
B. To identify aesthetic currents and trends in various historical periods;
C. To understand political constraints and artistic cleavages at the level of production.

Program
1. The beginnings of Portuguese cinema: the first years of cinema in Portugal; Aurélio da Paz dos Reis; Leitão de Barros; Invicta Film.
2. Cinema in the Estado Novo: Portuguese comedy; propaganda.
3. Portuguese cinema in the 1950s: years of cinephilia and training; Portuguese comedy and the creative crisis; the case of Manoel de Oliveira; the neo-realism of Manuel Guimarães.
4. The New Portuguese Cinema: the Cunha Telles Productions; the Gulbenkian Years.
5. Cinema and the Revolution: pre-revolutionary and revolutionary cinemas.
6. The divide between auteur cinema and commercial cinema: the clash of perspectives; the Portuguese School; the international affirmation of Portuguese cinema.
7. The generation of the 90s: Teresa Villaverde, Pedro Costa, among others.
8. Trends in contemporary Portuguese cinema.

Evaluation Methodology
1. Frequency assessment
1.1 Attendance and regular intervention on the themes-films under discussion in class (10%).
1.2 Two written tests (attendance): one written test during the semester (45%) and another written test at the end of the semester (45%).

2. Exam-based assessment
2.1 Normal Season: Written test (attendance) covering all taught content (100%)
2.2 Appeal Season: Written test (attendance) covering all taught content (100%)
2.3 Special Season: Written test (attendance) covering all taught content (100%)

The evaluation is made in accordance with the provisions of Art. 11 of the Academic Regulation of IPT Schools. Students who obtain a grade equal to or greater than 10 values are waived from the Exam.
