Objectives
Understand the phenomenon of colour, how it is perceived by humans, and its importance in photographic image production.

Recognise the subjective nature of colour perception and the limitations associated with colour reproduction.

Understand the principles of colour management and apply them throughout the different stages of photographic production, from image capture to printing, in order to improve control and consistency in colour reproduction.

Program
The phenomenon of colour:
• The phenomenon of colour, its perception, and the historical development of colour theories;
• The relationship between light sources, the object, and the observer;
• Systems for organising and representing colour;
• The importance of colour in photographic image composition.


Colour management mechanisms:
• Colour in digital systems: CIE XYZ, CIELAB, RGB, and CMYK colour models and colour spaces;
• Colorimetry and spectrophotometry;
• Colour management mechanisms applied to different devices;
• Characterisation, calibration, and profiling of photographic capture, display, and reproduction devices;
• Colour profile conversion: Profile Connection Space (PCS), Color Management Module (CMM), and rendering intents.

Printing:
• Image reproduction systems;
• Photographic printing procedures;
• Application of colour management procedures in the printing process, including the use of custom output profiles;
• Analysis of different printing systems and substrates.

Evaluation Methodology
Continuous assessment is carried out through the individual presentation of one theoretical and two practical exercises.

The final grade will be considered:

• Written document (20%)
• Practical exercise 1 (30%)
• Practical exercise 2 (30%)
• Participation in classes (20%).


Failure to submit the exercises mentioned above excludes the student from the exam.
The student is exempt from the exam with a grade equal to or greater than 10 points.
The student will only be admitted to the exam with a minimum average of 7 points in the continuous assessment.

The exam will include a theoretical component (40%) and a practical component (60%), through a written exam and the execution of a practical exercise.

Teaching Method
Teaching methods combine theory and practice through lectures, demonstrations and exercises related to the course contents. The exercises progressively consolidate learning and prepare students for assessment tasks.
