Objectives
To promote and develop interest in understanding and reflecting on the phenomenon of sport as a social field in contemporary societies, the student must: (1) Analyse the relationships between sport and different dimensions of society, encouraging critical reflection on the social function of sport in contemporary societies; (2) Understand and reflect on sport as a phenomenon and social practice endowed with symbolic and cultural meanings in different historical contexts; (3) Identify and analyse examples of relevant sociological studies that address sport as a social phenomenon.
To understand and interpret the importance of sport as a social phenomenon, as well as the positive and negative aspects of sport in today's society, the student must: (4) Identify the benefits and challenges associated with youth sports participation, including competitive pressure and social exclusion; (5) Understand the social and cultural causes of violence in sport, both in sporting practices and in its manifestations in the public and in organizations; (6) Analyse gender, racial and ethnic inequalities present in the world of sport, both in terms of practice and media representation; (7) Interpret the different possible relationships between sport, economy and market, including the impact of the commercialization and professionalization of sporting practices; (8) Assess the political and religious instrumentalization of sport, analysing examples of sporting events and practices with a strong symbolic and ideological charge; (9) Study the development of modern sport and its relationship with social, economic and cultural changes in contemporary societies. (10) Understand the role of the media in the construction of idols and sports narratives and the implications of mediatization and globalization on the consumption and practice of sport.

Violence in sport; 6. Gender, racism and ethnicity in sport; 7. Economy, politics and religion in sport; 8. Modern sport and society analysis; 9. Sport and globalization: Social communication and the role of the media in the transformation of sport.

Evaluation Methodology
The assessment process consists of two research Group Works (GW), subject to presentation in class and mandatory discussion by all students in each group, and the completion of an individual Assessment Test (AT).

Final Assessment = 75% TG + 25% TA

This proposal is applicable to all evaluation periods, continuous and final.

Teaching Method
Initial use of the expository and interactive method and later the alternating use of guided reading and analysis of texts with discussion and reflection of practical situations. Independent research of bibliographic sources will also be encouraged.
