Objectives
Students must acquire skills in the field of Catalytic Reactor Engineering, aiming at heterogeneous catalysis, efficiency of solid catalysts, analysis and design of multiphase reaction systems and multifunctional reactors

Program
1. Introduction. Brief review on chemical kinetics and ideal homogeneous chemical reactors.
2.Heterogeneous catalysis.
2.1 Characterization of catalysts;
2.2 Catalyst deactivation and regeneration
3. Behavior of Catalyst Particles.
3.1 Mathematical models.
3.2 Damkholer equation.
3.3 Efficiency factors.
3.4 Thiele's modulus.
3.5 Operating regimes: chemical, intermediate and diffusional.
3.6 Falsified kinetics due to diffusional limitations.
4. Fixed Bed Catalytic Reactors.
4.1 Mathematical models.
4.2 Pseudo-homogeneous and heterogeneous models.
4.3 One-dimensional and two-dimensional models.
4.4 Ergun equation.
5. Multiphase Heterogeneous Reactors.
5.1 Global Speed.
5.2 Global Transfer Coefficient.
5.3 Trickle-Bed Reactors.
5.4 Slurry Reactors.
5.5 Fluidized Bed Reactors.

6. Examples of industrial applications.

The practical work to be carried out is related to the simulation of the operation of heterogeneous reaction systems - Performance of Fixed Bed Catalytic Reactors.

Evaluation Methodology
The final classification in the different evaluation periods is obtained by weighing the classifications obtained in a written test (65%) and in the practical task of analyzing the performance of fixed-bed catalytic reactors (35%). Students who do not complete the practical task during the contact period will be excluded from the final assessment. At any assessment time, the minimum rating that allows approval is 10 points.
