Objectives
Students should be able to evaluate the and minimaze
the environmental impacts of industry in the ecosystem. Know the law anti-pollution.
What means air and water pollution. The effects of Waste disposal. Process for minimization of contaminants and new technologies.
Program
Polution concept. Irreversible process.
Legislation, regulation and ethics.
Portuguese Environmental Agency.
Hydrology. Wastewater treatment.Primary and secondary treatment.Aerobic and anaerobic processes.
Air pollution. Contaminants and energy production. OCDE efforts to reduce emissions. Greenhouse effet and carbon dioxide.
Meteo inffluence. The Gauss Model for dispersion.
Treatment systems.
Introduction to "Noise Pollution".
Solid waste management.
Hazardous wastes. Incineration.
Laboratory work:
TSS evaluation;
Optimization of a coagulation-floculation process;
COD evaluation;
Process control in a lab. Equipment for Waste Water Treatment;
Primary treatment in the lab. equipment with final evaluation of TSS, COD and total oxygen dissolved.;
Evaluation Methodology
1- Continuous assessment includes problem solving. Compulsory Lab practice and report.
10% Lessons, 30% Lab Report, 60% resolution of individual exercises.
Pass requirement: If > 10 and individual exercises >8
2- Exam. Final mark:
25% (reports) and 75% (written exam)
