Objectives
At the end of this curricular unit the student must be able to identify soils, determine their parameters and make calculations for study the relationships between stresses and deformations, settlements by consolidation, times for consolidation, acceleration of consolidation; load capacity, shear strength, safety coefficients for different types of loads and pressures, lateral earth pressure and retaining walls . Evaluate the permeability of soils and the effects of seepage of water on structures.Must know the methods of geotecnical investigation and testing.
Program
1-Brief review of soil stresses and load transmission.2-Seepage theory and groundwater flow: Darcy law, permeability, laboratory and in situ tests for determination of coefficient of permeability, permeability of layered soils, seepage force, seepage flow, stress in soil mass, seepage flow in isotropic and in anisotropic soil. Flow under retaining structures. Instability phenomena due to water pressure Filters. Capillarity. Laboratorial and in site tests
3-Compressibility and consolidation of confined clay strata. Settlement analysis. Terzaghi Theory. Laboratory tests for consolidation. Biot theory. Radial consolidation and preloading. 4-Shear strength theory: study of sandy and clay soils, laboratory tests for determination of the shear strength parameters. 5-Lateral earth pressure: theories related to this subject, different soil types and conditions of saturation and loading. Seismic conditions. 6- Slope stability: different slopes, different types of materials, with and without seepage. Methods for calculating the stability of slopes. Stability of embankments and excavations. Methods for slope stabilization. 7-Geotechnical exploration. Field and laboratory tests. Examples of work and geotechnical reports. 8-Laboratorial tests. Exercises.
Evaluation Methodology
Written test in the appropriate assessment periods including a theoretical and a practical component. A minimum of 40% in each component and a mark of 9.5 out of 20 is required to pass the course.
