Objectives
Students should develop the skills that will allow them to identify minerals, rocks and geological structures, analyse their mechanical behaviour, applications in civil emgineering and their impact on civil engineering practice.
They should also be able to identify the composition and properties of the different types of soils, apply applicable standards, carry out laboratory tests and interpret the results. On-site monitoring of compaction works. Stress calculation.
Program
1-Origin of Engineering Geology and its importance for civil engineering works. 2-Structure and composition of the Earth. 2.1 Internal Geodynamics. 2.2 Types of matter, properties and chemical bonds. 2.3 Basic concepts of crystallography and crystallochemistry. 2.4 Study of minerals and rocks, with laboratory identification.
3-Geological structures. 3.1 Study and geotechnical classification of rocky massifs. 3.2 Geology of Portugal.
4-Introduction to Soil Mechanics.4.1 Origin. 4.2 Soil properties. 4.3 Standardization, testing and classification.4.4 Compactation: concept, application to different types of soils, laboratory and field tests, equipments. 5-Stresses in the soil mass. 5.1 Stresses at rest (due to self-weight). 5.2 Stresses due to external loads (applied loads). 5.3 Elastic solutions.Practice: I-Macroscopic identification of samples: minerals and rocks.
Evaluation Methodology
Assessment includes written tests or exams comprising a theoretical and a practical component. Minimum pass mark: 40% of each component and minimum average mark of 9.5/20.
