Objectives
A. Problematize the concept of documentary and its transformation throughout the history of cinema.
B. Be familiar with the turning points in the history of the documentary cinema from the late 1950s to the present day.
C. Be able to analyse different modes of documentary.
D. Be familiar with relevant moments and names in the history of documentary cinema in Portugal.
Program
1. Documentary cinema from the late 1950s to the present day: Cinema Vérité and Direct Cinema from the 1950s and 1960s; the documentary between tradition and change in the 1970s; the new voices of documentary in the 1980s; the documentary from the 1990s onwards.
2. Modes of the documentary genre: poetic; expository; observational; participatory; reflexive; performative.
3. The history of documentary cinema in Portugal: José Leitão de Barros; Manoel de Oliveira; António Campos; Fernando Lopes; António Reis and Margarida Cordeiro; Noemia Delgado; Pedro Costa; Jorge Pelicano; Leonor Teles; documentary filmmakers linked to APORDOC.
Evaluation Methodology
1. Continuous assessment
1.1 Attendance and regular intervention on the themes-films under discussion in class (10%).
1.2 Two written tests (attendance): one written test during the semester (45%) and another written test at the end of the semester (45%).
2. Exam-based assessment
2.1 Normal Season: Written test (attendance) covering all taught content (100%)
2.2 Appeal Season: Written test (attendance) covering all taught content (100%)
2.3 Special Season: Written test (attendance) covering all taught content (100%)
The evaluation is made in accordance with the provisions of Art. 11 of the Academic Regulation of IPT Schools. Students who obtain a grade equal to or greater than 10 values are waived from the Exam.
