Objectives
Students should get get knowledge about the history and goals of microbiology. They should understand microbial diversity, its evolution and taxonomy, structures and typical morphologies, organization, nutritional needs, metabolism and reproduction. They should also acquire notions about the interactions between microorganisms in natural systems, as well as, the role of these beings in living systems and biotechnological production. Emphasis will also be placed on controlling microorganisms through physical and chemical agents.
Program
Theoretical program
1 - Introduction to microbiology
1.1 Objectives and history; 1.2 Insertion of microbial taxonomy in the context of living beings; 1.3 Main groups of microorganisms, role and importance; 1.4 Microbiology's application fields.
2 - Characteristics of the different groups of microorganisms
2.1 Prokaryotic microorganisms - bacteria and archaea. 2.2 Eukaryotic microorganisms - Fungi, algae and protozoa. 2.3 Viruses - constitution, classification and replication.
3 - Nutrition, growth and reproduction of microorganisms
3.1 Requirements and nutritional types. Nutrient intake. 3.2 Multiplication and death of a microbial population. Generation time and growth rate. Quantitative assessment of growth. 3.3 Limiting factors and microbial control. 3.4 Basis of microbial metabolism.
4 - Applied Microbiology
4.1 Characterization of different microbiological systems - water, soil and air. 4.2 Microbiology of food. 4.3 Water purification, wastewater treatment and bioremediation. 4.4 Industrial microbiology. Industrial process prerequisites. Major microbial products. Industrial uses of bacteria and fungi.
Practical program
TP1 - Preparation and sterilization of material.
TP2 - Preparation and sterilization of culture media.
TP3 - Aseptic handling and culture techniques.
TP4 - Microorganisms in the environment.
TP5 - Viable microorganisms counting in milk samples.
TP6 - Direct counting of total microorganisms in Neubauer chamber.
TP7 - Bacterial staining.
TP8 - Fungi culture and microscopic observation.
TP9 - Water microbiological analysis (culturable microorganisms, coliform group, E. coli, enterococci).
Evaluation Methodology
A - Continuous practical assessment (compulsory practical works - 50% and practical test - 50%).
B - Final theoretical test.
Final evaluation - 0.4*A + 0.6*B
