Prerequisites

Objectives
Questioning the origins of Photography as a technical process of reproducing reality, as opposed to traditional artisanal processes. To know the inventors of photography, the authors of the time, and the way in which these inventors and authors thought about the invention of Photography itself. To know about the first reflections on the invention of photography, and on the way in which this new process of representing reality has changed society and the way of "seeing" the world. To contribute to the acquisition of knowledge, structured and grounded, about the consequences of the invention of photography in the society of the 19th and 20th centuries.

The representation of the real - the craft processes and the technical process: the image as a double of reality;
The invention and inventors of Photography:
- Memorandum on Heleography - Nicéphore Niepce;

- The Report of the Commission of the French Chamber of Deputies - Dominique Arago;
- A Brief Historical Sketch on the Invention of Art - Fox Talbot;
19th century, the first debates:
- The Modern Public and Photography - Charles Boudelaire;
- Idealism, Realism, Expressionism - Henry Peach Robison;
- Suggestions on Art - Peter Henry Emerson;
- The Daguerreotype - Edgar Allan Poe;
- Photography - Lady Elizabeth Eastlake;
Photography asserts itself:

Photography in Portugal in the 19th century:

Evaluation Methodology
According to the topics to be addressed, several themes will be proposed to be developed throughout the semester. These works will require research and autonomous study by the students. The works will be presented, discussed and defended before the class. The final evaluation will result from the arithmetic average obtained in the set of works carried out during the semester.
The exam will require a written test.

Teaching Method
Theoretical classes will be taught, study visits and external participation will be organized, but applied research projects will also be proposed based on texts, documents and testimonies of the agents of the invention of photography.
