Objectives
On completion of this course, students should be able to:
a) identify and understand conceptually the main theories of cinema;
b) establish and reflexively criticise the relationship between the theory and practice of cinema;
c) describe the evolution of aesthetic and technological paradigms.
Program
1. Film theory(ies).
2. First theoretical approaches: Hugo Münsterberg, Bela Balazs and Rudolf Arnheim.
3. Soviet theorists: Dziga Vertov and Serguei Eisenstein.
4. Phenomenology of Realism: Andre Bazin, Sigfried Kracauer, Guido Aristarco and Slavoj Zizek.
5. Modern Cinema: András Kovács and Gilles Deleuze.
6. Other Cinemas: Frantz Fanon, Glauber Rocha and Fernando Solanas.
7. Gender theory: Laura Mulvey.
8. Digital Cinema and convergence culture:Lev Manovich, Tom Gunning and Henry Jenkins.
9. Cinephilia and film culture: Antoine De Baecque and Thomas Elsaesser.
Evaluation Methodology
Midterm assessment:
- Critical review (30%)
- Midterm test (70%)
Exam-based assessment.
Written test (100%).
