Objectives
Students should be able to evaluate the environmental impacts of industrial processes.
Program
Polution concept. Irreversible process.
Legislation, regulation and ethics.
Portuguese Environmental Agency.
Hydrology. Wastewater treatment.Primary and secondary treatment.Aerobic and anaerobic processes.
Air pollution. Contaminants and energy production. OCDE efforts to reduce emissions. Greenhouse effet and carbon dioxide.
Meteo inffluence. The Gauss Model for dispersion.
Treatment systems.
Introduction to "Noise Pollution".
Solid waste management.
Hazardous wastes. Incineration.
Laboratory work:
TSS evaluation;
Optimization of a coagulation-floculation process;
COD evaluation;
Process control in a lab. Equipment for Waste Water Treatment;
Primary treatment in the lab. equipment with final evaluation of TSS, COD and total oxygen dissolved.;
Evaluation Methodology
1- Continuous assessement including problem solving.
10% classes, 35% lab., 55% watch problems.
2- Final examination
25% (lab. repport) and 75% (examen)
