Objectives
The students will familiarise themselves with the theory of systems and signals with emphasis on continuous linear and time invariant systems
They should be able to work with MATLAB
- a software for the analysis and simulation of signals systems.
Program
1 Introduction: Signals and systems classification.
2 Qualitative analysis of LTI systems: time constant and rise; bandwidth and cutoff frequency; resonance.Analysis of continuous LIT systems in time domain.
3 Qualitative analysis of LTI systems: time constant and rise time; bandwidth and cutoff frequency; resonance.
4 Analysis of LIT systems in frequency domain: Laplace transforms; transfer function; stability; transient response and steady state response, frequency response of 1st and 2nd order systems.
5 Block diagram representation: construction, simplification and analysis.
6 Mathematical modelling of systems: electrical systems. Mechanical translation systems. Mechanical rotation systems. Liquid systems. Servomechanisms modeling.
7 Analog filters: low-pass filters, band-pass and high-pass; filter characteristics; analysis of passive filters, seen as of 1st and 2nd order systems.
8 Basic Systems Identification: examples.
9 Transient and steady state analysis of higher-order systems.
10 State-space systems representation.
Evaluation Methodology
Written closed-book examination in the regular assessment seasons( 75%); and Practical assignments (25%).

Teaching Method
Lectures expositive and demonstrative where the study methods are described and exemplified; theoretical-practical and laboratory-practices lessons where application exercises are solved and
where laboratory experiments are implemented.
