Objectives
At the end of this curricular unit the student must be able to identify soils, determine their parameters and make calculations for study the relationships between stresses and deformations, settlements by consolidation, times for consolidation, acceleration of consolidation; load capacity, shear strength, safety coefficients for different types of loads and pressures, lateral earth pressure and retaining walls . Evaluate the permeability of soils and the effects of seepage of water on structures.Must know the methods of geotecnical investigation and testing.
Program
Soil water. Seepage. Compressibility and consolidation of clay strata. Acceleration of consolidation. Shear strength. Earth pressures. Slope stability. Geotechnical investigation and testing. Brief reference to geotechnical studies. Resolution of exercises. Laboratory tests.
Evaluation Methodology
Written test in the appropriate assessment periods including a theoretical and a practical component. A minimum of 40% in each component and a mark of 9.5 out of 20 is required to pass the course.
