Objectives
An overview of the history of C&R:the 19th century and Viollet-le-Duc and John Ruskin;the modern theories of Camilo Boito, Giovannoni and Césare Brandi. Recent contemporary authors. Students must demonstrate to understand C&R ethical principles and make informed decisions.

Program
Summary of interventions on artwork before a concept of restoration. The nineteenth century.; Early theories and intervention criteria - the stylistic restoration of Viollet-le-Duc; John Ruskin and anti-restoration movement. Modern theories and criteria: Camillo Boito and Giovannoni. Brandi and the Critical Restoration. The evolution in Portugal - the century. XIX; Museum of Fine Arts to the present day. The performance of DGEMN.The full conservation.
1.Heritage, conservation and restoration. Previous notions and concepts.
2.Heritage and Monument, the evolution in time to the concept of cultural property. How is born the culture of conservation and restoration
3.As interventions on the works of art. Sculpture and pintura.Tratados, and theories from antiquity to the century. XIX. Early theories and intervention criteria and its genesis.
4.Teory of architectural intervention. Scientific restoration and critical restoration. Approaches to the art object. Respect the material and immaterial point of view, original materials. Compatibility concept, authenticity and irreversibility. Cesare Brandi and Theory of Restoration.

7.The restoration in Portugal - nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Extinction of religious orders and the defense of Portuguese heritage (D. Fernando II, Almeida Garrett, Mousinho de Albuquerque, Alexandre Herculano, Ramalho Ortigão.
8.The workshop of ancient art museum and the Institute José Figueiredo. The creation of DGEMN, their interventions, and its dissemination of publications.
9.Preventive conservation. The Conservative Restorer, training, functions, duties by law.
