Prerequisites
Basic computer knowledge.

Objectives
This course has as main objectives:
1 - To know the nature and importance of information in health care;
2 - Teach basic concepts and activities for the application of technology in providing health care;
3 - Raising awareness on the difficulties and challenges associated with application of information technology to the health sector;
4 - Evaluate the socio-cultural aspects of information technology in health institutions.
The core competencies to be acquired by students:
• Master the classification, organization and distribution of patient health systems data;
• Knowledge of different aspects of information technology application in the health sector;
• Understand and be able to cope with the difficulties and challenges inherent in the use of information technology in health.

The diagnostic-therapeutic cycle and its relation to information systems;
The use of information technology in health;
Paper and electronic clinical records;
Clinical decision support systems;
Telemedicine and e-health;
The impact of information technology in health;
Clinical research and assessment systems;
Management and care;
Myths and challenges of information technology in health

Evaluation Methodology
The assessment consists of completing a written test, with a weight of 40% of final grade, and individual work, with a weight of 60% of final grade. The student will be approved provided that the average of two components of assessment is equal to or greater than 9.5.

Teaching Method
Given the objectives of the course in Health Informatics teaching method consists in oral exposing of the syllabus provided (lectures), the presentation and discussion of topics related to them (theoretical and practical classes) and is still planned tutorial guidance sessions that allow the student to have a personalized education. Even within classes of theoretical and practical nature are planned some visits to institutions and / or business whose aim is to provide to the students a contact with the informatics reality or in planning / development in the health sector . It shall be used too an e-learning platform.
