Prerequisites

Objectives
It is designed to give students:
1 - Knowledge of basic biological principles underlying the field of bioinformatics
2 - Knowledge of application and development of key technologies and bioinformatics algorithms;
3 - Advanced knowledge of statistical methods;
4 - Advanced knowledge of techniques for extracting useful knowledge from large and complex biological databases.
Skills to be acquired:
• Learn to identify major problems in the area of bioinformatics and select the algorithms and computational techniques most appropriate;
• Ability to analyze and interpret the results of bioinformatics tools;
• Understand and be able to implement the main algorithms of bioinformatics;
• Ability to propose and test hypotheses according to the statistical method most appropriate in the context of biological data analysis.

Program
Technologies and bioinformatics algorithms;
Molecular and cellular biology;
Biochemical engineering;
Statistical methods for bioinformatics;
Extraction of knowledge in biological databases

Evaluation Methodology
The evaluation method consists of making a written test and the achievement of a theoretical-practical, since both components contribute with a weight rating of 50% of the final classification. To obtain approval for the course the student must achieve a final grade, averaged from the two components of assessment, equal to or greater than 9.5.

Teaching Method
Since the objectives of the Bioinformatics course teaching method consists in oral exposition of the syllabus provided (lectures), the presentation and discussion of topics related to them (theoretical-practical classes) and also in solving exercises and problems practical, using specific software tools. Are also provided tutorial orientation sessions and used the e-learning platform of as a tool for disseminating information, answering questions, posting handouts, exercise sheets and other materials.
