Lecturer
- Rosa Brígida Almeida Quadros Fernandes (2)
(1) Docente Responsável
(2) Docente que lecciona
Prerequisites
Basic algebra and elementary trigonometry.
Objectives
Basic concepts and principles of waves, the dual nature of light and some applications of geometric and wave optics. Students should familiarise themselves with these concepts and principles in order to solve problems in the abovementioned domains.
Program
1-General characteristics of light: speed;index of refraction; period; frequency; wavelenght;electromagnetic spectrum
2-Reflection (RE) and refraction (RA) of light: practical aplications of RE and RA laws
3-Transmission and absortion of light: practical applications of the Beer law Light scattering
4-Practical applications of Planck law
Evaluation Methodology
Development of a group work linking optics to a theme of choice (personal or course). Multiple choice final exam. Students have the opportunity to practise at home: they are provided 11 online multiple choice tests with automatic feedback.

Teaching Method
Theoretical-practical classes for a variety of problems resolution, group work development and laboratory experiments. For aditional clarification of concepts and laws, online simulations are used and experimental videos are visualized.
Software used in class
Moodle, PHET simulations and another online simulations.
